We have so much to be thankful for in 2021! Mainly due to the fact that we can celebrate that 2020 is now in the rearview. But also, because many groups didn’t take their feet off the gas while stuck in quarantine and have been tirelessly working towards projects that we so desperately need to hear right now.

Luckily for us, we’re getting our first real taste of studio a cappella from the college scene as we’ve been given exclusive access to a brand new EP by Halftime, a co-ed a cappella group from the University of Notre Dame.

The group’s latest release Comeback is jam-packed with charisma, contemporary stylings and big vocals. Recorded during the Fall of 2020, the EP comes fresh off an unorthodox year that saw many groups having to forego normal operations in light of the pandemic.
And while this past year proved to be difficult, Halftime decided to send a message of hope through their project which is perfectly penned in the following statement by the group:

“We feel this EP is a great testament to making the best of a difficult situation and joining together through music.”

The message is a wonderful metaphor for the three tracks the group features in this new EP. The project kicks-off with a massive BANG in a larger-than-life rendition of James Brown’s It’s A Man’s World! Simply put, the track will leave you stunned with its in-your-face energy lead by a trio of exhilarating female soloists. Each one is capable of holding down the melody on their own, but instead combine for a collective powerhouse performance that’s both tantalizing and animated.

And while the leads are absolute rock stars, it’s impossible to ignore Halftime’s incredible backing singers who are holding down every bit of the song’s killer foundation. Both parts are in complete sync with each other delivering a show that you never want to end.

Halftime follows this up with a slick rendition of one of the biggest hits from 2020 in Harry Styles’ Watermelon Sugar. The track offers a nice respite from the previous energized vocal display with its more subdued musical offerings, which at times still packs a vocal punch thanks to its lead and rhythm section. The backing parts are incredibly rich as they showcase the arrangement’s active layering and solid groove. It’s the type of chill and relaxing song that you can see yourself cruising along the California coast to just as the sun is setting.

Halftime finishes off the EP with an emotionally charged cover of Khalid’s Vertigo, which both sounds and feels authentic. In a live performance, it’s rather challenging to collectively sync up on the same emotional wavelength. The fact that Halftime was able to do so in the studio for this gem is rather remarkable.

Vertigo screams cohesion as the group nails every rhythm, vocal attack, and more importantly, the song’s feel as they beautifully convey a reflective sounding track that can only be accomplished by a highly skilled group of singers. There’s so much to admire about this track from the ebb and flow of the song’s dynamics to the immaculate support from the harmonies.

You will love this track!

Comeback is an amazing EP that features magnificent production and beautiful vocals. This is a great collection of music to start your 2021 off with and should be added to whatever playlist you listen to regularly!
