Let me start by giving props to any groups who are brave enough to perform a Michael Jackson on the biggest stage in collegiate a cappella, the ICCAs.
For starters, the King of Pop, in my personal opinion is the most difficult musician to cover. What's even more challenging is making one of his songs your own and reshaping it into something that fits perfectly into your group's element.
Someone obviously didn't relay this message to NYU's Mixtapes. Not only does the group attempt MJ's "Smooth Criminal" but they breathe a sense of new life into it with a lead who has plenty of vocal chops and a crazy breakdown section featuring various rhythmic patterns consisting of multiple beatboxers followed by some layered singing. It's easy to see how this song won best arrangement.
